Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This declaration approves the University of Western Australia Superannuation Scheme (established in 1979) as an "eligible superannuation scheme" under the Superannuation Act 1976.

What this means:

For Commonwealth employees: If you leave a federal government job to work at the University of Western Australia, you can transfer your accumulated Commonwealth superannuation benefits into the University's scheme.
Why it matters: Without this approval, your government super benefits would be trapped in the Commonwealth system when you change employers. This declaration makes your retirement savings portable, ensuring you don't lose benefits when moving between the public service and the University.
Timing: The declaration applies retrospectively from 1 September 1979, ensuring staff who moved to the University from that date onwards are covered.
