Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This 1977 declaration gives official Commonwealth recognition to the James Cook University of North Queensland Staff Superannuation Scheme. It certifies the university's staff retirement fund as both an "eligible" and "approved" scheme under the federal Superannuation Act 1976.

Why this matters Being declared eligible and approved likely means:

Staff can transfer (port) their retirement benefits between this university scheme and other Commonwealth public sector schemes
The scheme qualifies for tax concessions and regulatory protections under federal law
Members keep their accumulated benefits when moving to or from other government jobs

Timing trick Although signed on 1 November 1977, the declaration took effect retrospectively from 1 July 1976. This backdating ensured staff contributions and benefits from mid-1976 onwards were covered by the declaration.
