Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What it is: These regulations set the pay rules for people who chair dispute resolution panels in Australia's stevedoring industry (the business of loading and unloading ships).

What it does: Instead of listing specific dollar amounts, the regulations "borrow" the payment rules from the general industrial relations system. Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of Boards of Reference (special tribunals that settle workplace disputes in the docks) receive the same fees, travel expenses, and fares as their counterparts in other industries governed by the Conciliation and Arbitration Regulations.

Who it affects:

People appointed to chair or deputy-chair dispute resolution boards under the Stevedoring Industry Act 1949
The stevedoring companies and unions involved in these disputes (who ultimately bear these costs)

Why it matters: This ensures consistency and fairness—dockside dispute resolvers get the same pay as other industrial arbitrators—without needing separate pay scales written specifically for the shipping industry.
