Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

The States Grants (Independent Schools) Act (No. 2) 1972 authorises the Commonwealth to pay grants to states to fund independent (non‑government) schools, with states responsible for distributing those funds.

Its significance is that it marks a federal expansion into financing non‑government education—supplementing an earlier 1972 Act—and represents a narrow appropriation law that shifted part of school funding away from exclusive state responsibility.
