Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises the Commonwealth Government to make one-off financial assistance payments to three specific states—South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania—from the national budget (the Consolidated Revenue Fund).

The legislation specifies exact amounts to be paid during the 1955–56 financial year:

South Australia: £5,400,000
Western Australia: £8,900,000
Tasmania: £4,200,000

These payments were designed to assist states with smaller populations or limited revenue bases. The Act operates as a simple appropriation (money bill), creating a legal authority to draw the specified sums from federal revenue and transfer them to the state governments. Once the payments are made for that financial year, the Act effectively exhausts its operation.
