Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises a one-off payment of £600,000 to South Australia and £100,000 to Tasmania as financial assistance for the year that began on 1 July 1948. The money comes from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the Commonwealth's main bank account) and is paid in addition to any grants those states received under the previous year's legislation.

In essence, this is a simple "top-up" payment to two state governments. During the 1940s, the federal government regularly provided direct budget support to states facing economic difficulties. Unlike modern funding agreements with complex rules and reporting requirements, this Act simply hands over fixed cash amounts to the named states with no conditions, eligibility tests, or application processes attached.

The Act is time-specific, covering the 1948–49 financial year, and received Royal Assent in June 1949—meaning it effectively authorised retrospective payments for a year already nearly completed.
