Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act authorises the Federal Government to pay £6.75 million to three states — South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania — as financial assistance for the year 1948–49.

Key points:

Who gets what: Western Australia receives the largest share (£3.6 million), followed by South Australia (£2.25 million) and Tasmania (£900,000).
Where the money comes from: The payments come from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (the Commonwealth’s main bank account).
Time limit: The assistance applies specifically to the financial year starting 1 July 1948.

This was a one-off grant to support these particular states, which historically relied on Commonwealth financial assistance due to lower revenue-raising capacity compared to other states.
