Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument sets a hard cap on fishing activity in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery for the 2018 calendar year.

The key limit: It fixes the total allowable effort at 550 standard squid jigging machines. This is essentially a quota on the amount of fishing gear that can be deployed across the entire fishery.

Who it affects: Commercial fishers licensed to operate in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery (covering Commonwealth waters off southern Australia, from southern Queensland around to Western Australia).

Why it matters: By restricting the total number of squid jigging machines allowed, the government prevents overfishing and ensures the squid population remains viable. Fishers must hold sufficient statutory fishing rights (effort units) to cover the machines they use.

Timing: This replaces the 2016 determination and automatically expires on 1 January 2019 unless a new determination is made.
