Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets a hard cap on fishing equipment for the Southern Squid Jig Fishery. For the 2015 calendar year, fishers in this fishery were collectively limited to using 550 standard squid jigging machines—specialized gear that catches squid by attracting them with lights and hooking them with multiple lures.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) issued this rule to prevent overfishing by controlling "fishing effort" (the amount of gear deployed at any given time). The limit applied from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2015, after which the determination automatically expired.

This is an example of input controls in fisheries management—regulating the amount of equipment allowed rather than just setting catch limits.
