Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination sets a strict limit on fishing activity in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery for the 2012 season.

It caps the total fishing effort at 560 standard squid jigging machines across the entire fishery for the year. A "standard squid jigging machine" is automated equipment that uses lines of baited hooks to catch squid, and "total allowable effort" is the maximum combined amount of this gear that all licensed boats can deploy.

Who it affects:

Commercial fishers holding permits for the Southern Squid Jig Fishery
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), which tracks and enforces the machine cap

Why it matters: The limit prevents overfishing by restricting total fishing power rather than just catch volume. By controlling how much automated gear can operate in the water, the rule helps ensure squid populations remain sustainable and aren't depleted by excessive fishing pressure.
