Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination sets a strict limit on fishing gear for the Southern Squid Jig Fishery. For the 2011 fishing year, the total number of standard squid jigging machines that can be used across the entire fishery is capped at 560.

What this means:

Total Allowable Effort (TAE): Instead of limiting how many squid can be caught by weight, this rule restricts the amount of equipment allowed. It's like limiting the number of fishing rods rather than the number of fish.
Who it affects: Commercial fishers licensed to operate in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery.
Why it matters: This 'effort limit' helps prevent overfishing by controlling fishing capacity, protecting squid populations while keeping the industry viable.

Technical terms used in the determination (like 'standard squid jigging machine') are defined in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery Management Plan 2005 and the Fisheries Management Act 1991.
