Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This determination sets a strict limit on how much fishing equipment can be used in the Southern Squid Jig Fishery during the 2010 fishing year.

Specifically, it caps the total allowable effort at 580 standard squid jigging machines.

What this means:

Squid jigging machines are automated fishing devices used to catch squid (primarily arrow squid in southern Australian waters)
Total allowable effort is a fisheries management tool that restricts the amount of fishing gear deployed to prevent overfishing and protect fish stocks
Commercial fishers operating in this fishery cannot collectively use more than 580 of these machines

This is an annual administrative cap set by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority under powers granted by the Fisheries Management Act 1991. It helps ensure squid populations remain sustainable by controlling fishing intensity.
