Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This legal instrument sets the total amount of Southern Bluefin Tuna that Australia is permitted to catch during the 2008/09 fishing season.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has fixed the national catch allocation at 5,265,000 kilograms (about 5,265 tonnes) for the season running from 1 December 2008 to 30 November 2009.

What this means:

This number acts as a national quota (total limit) for all Australian fishers combined
It helps prevent overfishing of Southern Bluefin Tuna, which is a protected species under international conservation agreements
Individual fishers or fishing companies will receive portions of this total allocation, but this document only sets the overall national cap
The limit is legally binding—catching more than this total amount would breach Australia's fisheries management laws
