Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document sets the total amount of Southern Bluefin Tuna that Australia is allowed to catch during the 2007-08 fishing season.

The quota: 5,265,000 kilograms (about 5,265 tonnes) of Southern Bluefin Tuna
When it applies: 1 December 2007 to 30 November 2008
Who made it: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (the government body that manages Commonwealth fisheries)
Legal basis: Made under the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery Management Plan 1995, which itself operates under the Fisheries Management Act 1991

Think of this as setting the "pie size" before it's divided up among individual fishers or fishing companies. This national limit helps ensure Australia meets its international conservation obligations for this threatened tuna species while allowing a sustainable commercial fishery to operate.
