What this does: This instrument sets the total amount of Southern Bluefin Tuna that Australian commercial fishers can catch during the 2020–2021 fishing season.
The catch limit: Australia's "national catch allocation" is fixed at 5,926,500 kilograms (approximately 5,927 tonnes) for the season running from 1 December 2020 to 30 November 2021.
Who it affects: Commercial fishers licensed to operate in the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery under Commonwealth law.
Why it matters: This cap ensures Australia complies with international conservation agreements for this threatened species. Once the total allocation is caught across all Australian fishers, fishing for Southern Bluefin Tuna must cease for that season.
