Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination stops specific drought water grants from reducing farmers' Centrelink payments.

Under social security law, lump sums usually count as income or assets, which can cut or cancel benefits like the Farm Household Allowance. This instrument declares certain water infrastructure rebates as "exempt lump sums" — meaning Centrelink completely ignores them when checking eligibility or calculating payment rates.

What it covers:

The Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate paid by New South Wales or Queensland agricultural departments
The Far North Water Infrastructure Grant for South Australian farmers, administered by Livestock SA

This ensures farmers can use these grants to buy tanks, pipes, or pumps for livestock water during droughts without losing their social security support.
