Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This declaration officially recognises the 2004 bombing of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta as a "declared overseas terrorist act" under the Social Security Act 1991.

What this does: By making this declaration, the Prime Minister triggers special provisions in social security law that allow payments or support to be provided to Australian victims of this specific attack.

The event covered: The declaration applies to the bombing that occurred on 9 September 2004 at the Australian Embassy on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said in South Jakarta, Indonesia.

Why this matters: When an overseas attack is formally declared a "terrorist act" under this law, it can affect eligibility for certain social security benefits (such as compensation or support payments) for people injured, killed, or otherwise affected by the attack. This ensures Australian victims of overseas terrorism can access financial support through the social security system.
