Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This short legal instrument adds the remote Aboriginal community of Mapurru (also spelled Maparu, Mapura, Mapuru, or Marparu) to a list of Northern Territory areas subject to special welfare rules.

Under Part 3B of the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999, declaring an area as "relevant" triggers income management—a system where a portion of social security payments are "quarantined" (restricted) to be spent only on essential goods like food and rent rather than as cash.

Key points:

Who it affects: People living in or receiving benefits connected to Mapurru, located in the Northern Territory.
What changes: Residents may have their welfare payments managed under the income management regime (part of the broader "Northern Territory Emergency Response" or "the Intervention").
How long: This determination was temporary, operating from 31 March 2008 until 24 March 2009.
