Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This short legal instrument declares the remote community of Laramba (also known as Napperby) in the Northern Territory to be a "declared relevant Northern Territory area."

What this means:

People receiving Centrelink or other social security payments who live in this area become subject to compulsory income management (also called "welfare quarantining").
Under this system, a set portion of their welfare payments (typically 50%) cannot be taken out as cash. Instead, it is placed on a restricted card or account that can only be used to buy essential items like food, clothing, medicine, and housing.
This measure formed part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response ("the Intervention"), a suite of policies applying to specific remote Indigenous communities.

Who is affected: Residents of Laramba/Napperby who receive social security benefits during the period this determination was in force.
