Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This determination temporarily allowed fishers to use jigging—a method using electric-powered machines with rotating lines and barbless hooks—to catch fish in the Small Pelagic Fishery (which targets small open-water species like sardines and mackerel).

Who does this affect?

Holders of fishing rights in the Small Pelagic Fishery
Anyone acting on their behalf (such as crew members)

What does it do? It authorised the use of motorised jigging machines for an 11-month period, from 1 May 2013 to 31 March 2014. Without this legal instrument, using this specific equipment would not have been permitted in this fishery.

Why does this matter? It provided a time-limited legal pathway for fishers to use modern, efficient jigging technology while ensuring the method was properly regulated and defined (specifically requiring barbless hooks).
