Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a formal proclamation that activates the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex Status) Act 2013.

On 1 August 2013, this proclamation brought Schedule 1 of that Act into force. This Schedule added new protections to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 making it illegal to discriminate against people based on:

Sexual orientation (who you are attracted to)
Gender identity (your internal sense of gender, which may differ from your sex assigned at birth)
Intersex status (having physical sex characteristics that don't fit typical male or female classifications)

In practical terms, this document served as the legal "start button" that extended existing discrimination protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in areas like employment, education, and service provision.
