Commonwealth legislation
This Proclamation establishes the outer limits of Australia’s continental shelf — setting precise coordinates around mainland Australia, Tasmania and external islands — based on scientific seabed data and international agreements with neighbouring states. By defining those boundaries (and repealing the 2005 Tasman/South Pacific proclamation), it secures Australian sovereignty and resource rights over seabed oil, gas and minerals and ensures compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
