Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a formal commencement proclamation—essentially the 'start button' for parts of the Safe Work Australia Act 2008.

What it does:

Brings sections 3 to 73 of the Safe Work Australia Act 2008 into legal effect on 1 November 2009
Signed by the Governor-General (Quentin Bryce) on 29 October 2009, acting on ministerial advice

Why it matters: Parliament can pass a law, but it doesn't automatically become active. This document officially 'switches on' the main body of the workplace safety legislation, allowing Safe Work Australia to begin operating and the new work health and safety rules to take effect.
