Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a straightforward spending bill from 1928 that does exactly what it says on the tin.

What it does: Authorises the Australian Government to withdraw £100,000 from the national bank account (called the Consolidated Revenue Fund) to buy radium.

Why it matters: In the 1920s, radium was one of the most valuable substances on Earth. It was used for cancer treatment (radiotherapy) and scientific research, but was incredibly rare and expensive. This Act simply provides the cash for Australia to acquire its own supply for hospitals and researchers.

Who it affects: Primarily taxpayers (who foot the bill) and medical institutions (who would receive the radium). The Act contains no rules about safety, storage, or how the radium should be distributed—it is purely a financial instruction to release the money.
