Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What it does This notice cancels a 2000 decision that had designated the 27 GHz radio frequency band for specific uses.

Why it matters Radio spectrum (the airwaves used for phones, internet, and broadcasting) is strictly regulated by the government. By repealing the old Radiocommunications (Spectrum Designation) Notice No. 1 of 2000, this instrument removes the previous restrictions on the 27 GHz band. This likely paves the way for new technologies—such as 5G mobile networks or satellite services—to access these frequencies, or allows the band to be managed under different regulatory rules.

Who it affects Primarily telecommunications companies, equipment manufacturers, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), which manages Australia's airwaves. The note clarifies that a different instrument with a similar name from January 2000 remains in force, ensuring only the specific May 2000 designation is removed.
