### 8 Interpretation of Part 3 > > (1)  In this Part – > > > > > ***period of service***, in respect of a member or former member, means the period, or the sum of the periods (whether continuous or not and whether before or after 27 November 2002), during which that member or former member was, or is, entitled to a parliamentary salary. > > > (2)  For the purposes of this Part, the period of service of a member to whom this Part applies or a former member is to be determined in accordance with the following provisions: > > > > > > (a) if a member of the House of Assembly ceases to be a member of the House by reason of its dissolution or its expiry by effluxion of time, he or she is taken to remain a member until the day fixed for the taking of the poll next following the dissolution or expiry of that House; > > > > > > > (b) subject to [paragraph (a)](#GS8@Gs2@Hpa@EN) , the actual period during which a person is a member is to be regarded as service for the purposes of this Part; > > > > > > > (c) service, before or after the commencement of these regulations, of members holding office on 1 July 1973 or at any subsequent time is to be taken into account; > > > > > > > (d) broken periods of a member's service are to be aggregated and credited to the member.
