70 Appointment on probation
(1) The appointment of a person to the service as an officer is subject to
a period of probation under this section, unless 1 of the following
sections applies to the appointment:
(a) section 71 (Appointment on probation—prescribed training
office);
(b) section 71A (Appointment on probation—teachers);
(c) section 71C (Appointment without probation).
(2) Probation begins on the day the person is appointed and the
appointment is taken to be confirmed 12 months after the day the
person is appointed unless—
(3) The appointment may be confirmed any day after the day the officer
is appointed if the head of service is satisfied that—

(4) The appointment may be ended at any time before the appointment is
confirmed, or taken to be confirmed, if the head of service is satisfied
on reasonable grounds that 1 or more of the following criteria for
being unsuitable for confirmation (the unsuitability criteria) applies
to the officer:
(a) the officer failed to have a medical examination to assess the
officer’s standard of health and fitness;
(b) the officer has had a medical examination to assess the officer’s
standard of health and fitness and an authorised doctor states, in
writing, that the officer’s standard of health and fitness is not at
a standard required for the office;
(c) an appropriate officer, for example the officer’s supervisor
states, in writing, that the officer has not exercised the officer’s
functions at a standard required for the office;
(d) the officer is not an eligible person to remain an officer;
(e) the officer is an excess officer.
