Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This proclamation formally creates the Port of Christmas Island by declaring a defined area of surrounding waters an official port under Western Australian shipping laws as applied to the territory. It affects vessels, pilots, port operators and businesses using the island’s waters by bringing them within the port’s regulatory regime. The designation enables mandatory pilotage, port safety and environmental rules to apply where they otherwise would not.
