Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a short, formal proclamation made by the Governor-General in 1982. It simply switches on the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 for the waters around Tasmania.

What it does:

Extends the Commonwealth's historic shipwreck protection laws to cover waters adjacent to Tasmania's coast.
Once in force, the Act makes it illegal to damage, interfere with, or remove artifacts from historic shipwrecks in these waters without a permit.

Who it affects:

Divers, fishermen, and maritime operators working in Tasmanian waters
Museums, heritage professionals, and salvage companies
Anyone who discovers shipwreck remains

Why it matters: Without this proclamation, the Act might not have applied to Tasmania (or might have had uncertain application). This ensures Tasmania's underwater cultural heritage—old shipwrecks and their contents—is protected under Commonwealth law, preventing looting and preserving maritime history for future generations.
