Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is the official 'switch-on' button that made the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 apply to New South Wales waters.

What it does:

The main Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 is a federal law that protects old shipwrecks and any artifacts found in them.
When the Act was first passed, it didn't automatically cover coastal waters of the states. It needed a separate Proclamation (official announcement) for each state.
This Proclamation extends the federal shipwreck protection laws to waters adjacent to the NSW coast.

Why it matters: Before this document, historic shipwrecks in NSW waters weren't protected by this federal law. After this Proclamation took effect, it became illegal to damage, disturb, or remove artifacts from protected shipwrecks in NSW coastal waters without a permit.
