Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: These Regulations set the amount that ship owners must pay into Australia's oil pollution compensation fund.

The key detail: The levy is set at 1 cent per ton of a ship's tonnage, charged every quarter.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of ships operating in Australian waters, who are required to contribute to a fund that pays for cleaning up oil spills.

Why it matters: This creates a 'polluter pays' system ensuring money is available to respond to oil pollution incidents at sea without relying solely on taxpayer funding.
