7 Meaning of *petroleum exploration* Petroleum exploration is the carrying out of one or more of the following activities for the purpose of finding petroleum or reservoirs— (a) conducting geological, geophysical and geochemical surveys; (b) making wells; (c) taking samples for the purposes of chemical or other analysis; (d) extracting petroleum from land for the purpose of determining whether it will be viable to extract it commercially.
