Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This law sets the exact dates when members of the Australian Parliament start receiving their parliamentary allowance (salary).

For Senators:

Elected after a full dissolution of the Senate: allowance starts from election day
Elected to fill a rotating seat (half-Senate election): allowance starts from the following 1 January
Appointed to fill a casual vacancy (mid-term replacement): allowance starts when the Governor certifies their appointment to the Governor-General

For House of Representatives members:

Allowance starts from the day they are elected (for elections held after this law passed)

The law references section 48 of the Constitution, which establishes that Members of Parliament must be paid for their services, and simply fills in the detail of when that payment begins.
