Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a commencement proclamation—a formal instrument that brings specific parts of the Nuclear Terrorism Legislation Amendment Act 2012 into legal force.

What it does:

Sets 20 April 2012 as the day when Schedule 1, Part 1 of the Act begins to apply
Acts under the authority granted to the Governor-General in the parent Act itself

Why it exists: Australian laws often don't start immediately when Parliament passes them. Instead, the Governor-General issues a proclamation to "switch on" specific sections when the government is ready for them to take effect. This document performs that switch-flipping function for the first part of the nuclear terrorism amendments.

Important note: This document doesn't define crimes or set penalties. It simply activates the amendments contained in Schedule 1, Part 1 of the main Act, which likely includes offences related to possessing radioactive materials with terrorist intent, or similar security measures.
