Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This short Act makes two changes to the law governing the Northern Territory:

1. Definition update It replaces the definition of "the Territory" to explicitly mean the Northern Territory of Australia.

2. Protection for public servants The main purpose ensures that Commonwealth public servants who are appointed as Administrator of the Northern Territory do not lose their employment benefits. If you were a federal public servant immediately before your appointment:

You retain all rights: You keep your existing and accruing employment entitlements (such as superannuation, long service leave, and pension rights)
Service continues to count: Your time working as Administrator is treated as if you were still serving in the Commonwealth Public Service when calculating these benefits

This prevents the Administrator role from being a career dead-end or financial disadvantage for public servants.
