Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What it does: This Act brings purely local Northern Territory (NT) industrial disputes under federal arbitration laws.

The problem it fixes: Before this law, the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Act only applied to disputes that crossed state borders (described as extending "beyond the limits of any one State"). Because the NT was not a state, local disputes happening entirely within the Territory couldn't access federal arbitration.

How it fixes it: The Act removes the words "which extends beyond the limits of any one State" from the definitions of "industrial dispute" in the Conciliation and Arbitration Act when that law is applied to the Territory.

Who it affects: Workers, employers, and unions in the Northern Territory involved in local wage disputes or industrial disagreements. It matters because it gives Territorians access to the same federal dispute resolution mechanisms available to people in the states.
