This Act authorised the Australian Government to pay New South Wales up to $1.4 million to help keep an asbestos mine running.

In 1978, the Commonwealth Parliament approved financial assistance to support the Chrysotile Corporation of Australia—specifically to help continue operations at their asbestos mine in Barraba, NSW (chrysotile is a type of white asbestos).

Key details:

Who: The Commonwealth gives money to the NSW government, which would pass it to the company
How much: Up to $1,400,000 total
When: For operations between 1 October 1978 and 31 December 1979 only
How: Through a formal agreement, with payments drawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund (Australia's main government bank account)

This was a short-term, one-off subsidy to support a specific regional mining operation during that 15-month period.
