What it does
The Nature Conservation Act 2002 (Tas) is Tasmania's primary framework statute for the conservation of nature. It establishes the reservation of Crown land for conservation purposes, the regulation of wildlife (fauna and flora), conservation covenants over private land, and enforcement powers for rangers and police. The Act commenced on the same day as the National Parks and Reserves Management Act 2002 (Tas) and the two Acts operate together as the foundational instruments for nature conservation in Tasmania.
The Act applies to reserved land across Tasmania and to the taking, possession, use and dealing in wildlife wherever it occurs in the State. Conservation covenants extend the regime to private land voluntarily.
