Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

These Regulations set up the basic administrative rules for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Fund.

What it does:

Declares the fund a trust account under the Audit Act (meaning it operates under strict financial oversight and auditing rules)
Controls how money enters the fund: Only government funds specifically budgeted (appropriated) by Parliament for purchasing and managing land for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can be paid into the account

Why it matters: The Land Fund was established to help Indigenous Australians acquire land. These regulations ensure the money is held securely in a government trust account and can only be used for its intended purpose (land for social, cultural or economic benefit).

Who it affects:

Government departments depositing appropriated funds
The body corporate responsible for managing the fund
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander beneficiaries of land purchases funded by the account
