Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This regulation expands what the wine industry can do with the Wine Export Fund.

Normally, this money could only be spent on marketing Australian wine overseas under the Wine Overseas Marketing Act. This rule adds a new power: the Wine Overseas Marketing Board can now spend the Fund on anything—including grants or subsidies—that it thinks will increase domestic wine sales within Australia.

Made during World War II, it effectively allows the industry to redirect export promotion money to boost local sales at a time when international shipping and markets were disrupted by the war.
