Commonwealth legislation
This regulation applies the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1987 to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, subject to the Australia–Vietnam Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters (2 July 2014); the treaty text appears in Schedule 1. The instrument only starts when it is registered and the treaty comes into force, and the Minister must announce that date (s2, s5). It therefore creates a legal basis for Australian authorities to provide and seek criminal‑justice assistance with Vietnam, governed by the treaty terms (s5).
