Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This law scraps the old rules protecting migratory birds in the Ashmore and Cartier Islands territory. It cancels three earlier laws: the original Migratory Birds Ordinance 1980 and two later updates from 1985 and 1988.

Who it affects This applies to the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean. It affects anyone who might interact with bird protection regulations in that area—though in practice, responsibility for protecting migratory birds likely shifted to Commonwealth environmental laws (such as the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999).

Why it matters This tidies up the statute book by removing outdated, territory-specific bird laws. Instead of maintaining separate local ordinances for bird protection, the islands now rely on national environmental laws that apply consistently across all Australian territories.
