Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This instrument decides which language qualifications earn you bonus points on Australia’s skilled migration visa points test.

Who it affects People applying for skilled visas who want to claim extra points for speaking a community language (such as Mandarin, Arabic, or Italian) in addition to English.

The rules To claim these points, your qualification must be:

From: Only NAATI (the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). Qualifications from universities or other language schools do not count for these specific points.
Level: At least “paraprofessional interpreter or translator” level (or higher). Basic certificates or preliminary accreditations are not enough.

Why it matters This determines whether you can claim 5 extra points for language skills on your visa application. If your language certificate isn’t from NAATI or isn’t at paraprofessional level or above, you cannot get these points, even if you are fluent in the language.
