Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does This instrument creates a list of specific occupations that are eligible for certain skilled work visas under Australia's migration system (specifically relating to employer-sponsored temporary and permanent visas). It acts as a gatekeeper—only the occupations listed here can be sponsored under the particular visa rules referenced in the Migration Regulations.

Who it affects

Overseas doctors seeking to work in Australia (including general practitioners, specialists such as surgeons, anaesthetists and psychiatrists, and medical trainees)
General Managers
Employers wanting to sponsor workers in these specific roles

Why it matters If a job isn't on this list, employers cannot use these specific visa pathways to sponsor that worker. This restrictive list of 14 occupation codes (mostly medical professionals) determines who qualifies for sponsorship under the relevant provisions of the Migration Regulations.
