This legislative instrument defines which parts of Australia count as regional areas for people on Working Holiday Visas (subclasses 417 and 462).
If you hold one of these visas, you can qualify for a second or third year in Australia by doing specified work—such as harvesting crops, working in fisheries, or mining—in these designated locations.
The instrument operates as a postcode lookup table:
- In New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia, only the listed postcode ranges qualify as regional (generally covering rural and outer metropolitan areas, excluding major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth).
- Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania are entirely classified as regional.
Employers and visa holders use this list to confirm whether a particular job location will count towards the visa extension requirements.
