Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This Proclamation sets 13 April 2013 as the official start date for Schedule 1 of the Migration Legislation Amendment (Student Visas) Act 2012. In plain terms, it is the legal "on switch" that activates changes to student visa laws previously passed by Parliament.

Why it matters Without this document, the 2012 amendments would remain inactive. From 13 April 2013:

New visa requirements apply to international students
Education providers must follow updated compliance rules
The Department of Immigration can enforce the amended provisions

Who is affected

International students seeking to study in Australia
Universities, colleges and registered training organisations
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (now Home Affairs)
