Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Proclamation is a formal notice by the Governor-General that activates (commences) the Migration Legislation Amendment (Immigration Detainees) Act (No. 2) 2001.

What it does:

Sets 28 September 2001 as the date the Act comes into force
Excludes sections 1 and 2 (these typically contain the formal title and commencement mechanism, which usually start immediately upon Royal Assent)

Why it matters: Australian laws often require a specific start date to be set by the Governor-General after they are passed by Parliament. This Proclamation officially 'switches on' the amendments, meaning they become legally enforceable from 28 September 2001.
