Migration Legislation Amendment Commencement Proclamation 2014

This is a short, formal proclamation by the Governor-General that acts like an on-switch for a specific part of migration law.

It sets 1 January 2015 as the exact date when Part 1 of Schedule 6 of the Migration Legislation Amendment Act (No. 1) 2014 comes into force.

Think of Parliament as having already written the new rules (in the Act), but leaving them in a locked box. This document is the key that opens the box on New Year's Day 2015, making those specific immigration rules legally active and enforceable from that date onward.

Who it affects: Anyone whose visa application or immigration status is governed by the specific provisions in Part 1 of Schedule 6—likely changes to visa processing or criteria—would see these rules apply from 1 January 2015 instead of immediately when the Act originally passed.
