Migration (Daily maintenance amount for persons in detention) Determination (LIN 22/031) 2022

This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.

This legal instrument sets the daily rate the Australian Government pays to cover the costs of keeping people in immigration detention at specific facilities.

What it does:

Fixes the daily maintenance amount at $490.69 per person
Applies to four specific detention centres: North West Point (Christmas Island), Perth, Villawood, and Yongah Hill, plus any other locations the Minister has approved in writing for detention purposes
Covers the two-year period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2024

Why it matters: This daily amount (sometimes called the 'per diem') represents the funding provided for each person held in immigration detention to cover basic living costs such as accommodation, meals, clothing, and security services. It directly affects the budget and resources allocated to run these detention facilities during the specified period.
