These regulations remove old immigration restrictions on people from Angola that were put in place to comply with United Nations Security Council sanctions.

Back in 1997, Australia made regulations blocking certain Angolan nationals from entering or remaining in Australia as part of international sanctions against the Angolan government. By 2003, the UN had lifted these sanctions, so Australia no longer needed the immigration restrictions.

This instrument simply repeals (cancels) the 1997 Migration (Angola — United Nations Security Council Resolutions) Regulations.

What this means:

Any travel bans or visa restrictions specifically targeting Angolans under those old UN sanctions are now removed
Normal immigration rules under the Migration Act 1958 now apply to people from Angola
This is a routine cleanup of outdated sanctions-related law

1 Name of Regulations

These Regulations are the Migration (Angola — United Nations Security Council Resolutions) Repeal Regulations 2003.

2 Commencement

These Regulations commence on 1 November 2003.

3 Migration (Angola — United Nations Security Council Resolutions) Regulations — repeal

Statutory Rules 1997 No. 404 is repealed.
